Further Suggested Reading

North Carolina Public Schools' READ NC summer reading initiative is based on Lexile measures reported in a student's end-of-grade test results.

To find books based on the Lexile system:

1. Go to North Carolina's Lexile Find-a-Book site
2. Enter the child’s Lexile measure.

  • A Lexile measure is included on the end-of-grade reading and English I end-of-course test score reports.

3. Have the child select interest categories
4. View and refine the search results

  • As you browse books that the child finds interesting, click the Find in a Library button next to the book title to check its availability at NHCPL.

5. Print the child’s custom reading list

A Note for Parents

A Note For Parents

  • Studies show that children who read four to six books during the summer maintain their reading skills.  Children who don't read during the summer lose skills and return to school at a disadvantage.

  • But studies also show that it doesn't matter what kids read -- and in fact kids who get to pick summer reading based purely on what they enjoy may do even better.

  • So don't stress about grade levels when you're helping your kids choose books for summer reading.  Let them choose books that get them excited -- and give yourself a pat on the back for reinforcing the message that reading is fun!
